Comedian Jim Gaffigan does a great riff on McDonalds where he says, “You may have never set foot in McDonalds, but you have your own McDonalds. Maybe instead of buying a Big Mac, you read Us Weekly. Hey, that’s still McDonalds, it’s just served up a little different. Maybe your McDonalds is telling yourself that Starbucks frappuccino is not a milkshake. Or maybe you watch Glee. It’s all McDonalds. McDonalds of the soul. Momentary pleasure followed by incredible guilt eventually leading to cancer. ‘I’m lovin’ it!’ We all have our own McDonalds…”
So one of my ‘McDonalds of the Soul’ is cheesy 80s movies and music, and particularly the outfits that go along with it. And Xanadu is one of the best. I actually prefer the musical to the movie, but you just can’t beat Olivia Newton-John’s clothing in that movie.
I’ve taken three looks (all from the end of the movie) – the glittery jumpsuit, the Egyptian robe, and the tiger print getup – and modernized them. Here’s the result.
And check out Jim Gaffigan’s McDonalds bit – it’s pretty funny.
